About this tool
Most document photo rules want a plain, uniformly lit background — white, off-white, light grey or, for some countries and visas, a specific colour. The Background Remover separates the person from the background with an on-device segmentation model and fills the background with the colour you choose, or leaves it transparent for a PNG. The model files are downloaded once to your browser; the photo itself never leaves it.
The result is meant to look like a photo taken against a plain wall, not a cut-out: edges are softened and you can touch up hair, ears and shoulders with a brush. If the model cannot run in your browser, the colour fill still works with a manual crop, and everything else on the site is unaffected.
How it works
- Upload a photo where the person is clearly separated from the background — a plain wall and even light give the best mask.
- Open the Background tab and switch on removal. The first run loads the model (a few megabytes); later runs are instant.
- Choose a fill colour or transparency, then check the edges. Use the touch-up brush to restore or erase small areas.
- Export as JPG (colour fill) or PNG (transparent) at the size your document requires.
Good to know
- Fine hair against a busy background is the hardest case for any segmentation model; a plain wall behind you saves more time than any brush.
- Keep the original lighting natural. Replacing a shadowed background with pure white while the face is dark looks edited and can be rejected.
- Some authorities do not permit any editing of the background at all. Check the record for your document before relying on removal.
Questions about this tool
Is the background removed on a server?
No. The segmentation model (MediaPipe Selfie Segmenter) runs inside your browser through WebAssembly, in a web worker. The photo is never transmitted anywhere.
Which colours are allowed for passport photos?
It depends on the country: white or off-white is the most common, light grey and cream are accepted by some, and a few visas ask for a specific colour. Each requirement page lists the colours the authority states.
The model failed to load. What now?
Check that your browser is up to date and not blocking WebAssembly, then press Try again. If it still fails, you can crop and export normally, and use a plain fill colour with a manual crop instead.
DocPixEdit provides technical guidance and automated checks based on the requirements and sources listed on this page. Requirements can change, and final acceptance is determined by the relevant authority. Always verify current requirements before submission.
