Keep your head inside the oval, shoulders level, even light on your face and a plain wall behind you.

What you get

  • Exact output dimensions in millimetres, inches or pixels at the DPI you need
  • Country and document presets with source links and verification dates
  • Background colour tools with optional on-device background removal

About this tool

National ID cards, residence permits, driving licences, student and staff cards each publish their own photo rules, and many of them borrow the 35 × 45 mm passport format while adding their own digital upload limits. The ID Photo Maker lets you start from a verified record where we have one, or type the size from the authority's instructions for anything else.

As with every tool on this site, the photo stays on your device. There is no account and no watermark; the download is a normal JPG or PNG at the requested pixel dimensions, with the DPI written into the file so a print service produces the right physical size.

How it works

  1. Upload a photo or use the camera. Plain background, even light, no hat or sunglasses unless the issuer allows them.
  2. Pick a record from the Country tab, or enter width, height and DPI in millimetres, inches or pixels under Size.
  3. Position the face using the guides; use auto-fit when a head-height range is known.
  4. Check the results and download, or place copies on a print sheet for a paper form.

Good to know

  • If the form says only "passport-size photo", the ICAO 35 × 45 mm layout is the safest choice in most countries; 2 × 2 inches in the United States.
  • Employers and universities often want a square or 3 : 4 photo for card printers — the custom size accepts any ratio.
  • Keep a copy of the exported file: card renewals frequently ask for the same photo again.

Questions about this tool

Is an ID photo the same as a passport photo?

Often, but not always. Many issuers accept the passport format, while others specify a different size, a digital-only upload, or looser rules on expression. Check the issuer's instructions; if they match one of our records, use it, otherwise enter the size they state.

Can I make a photo for a badge or an online profile?

Yes. Choose Document Photo, set any size you like, and export as PNG if you want to keep a transparent background after removing the original one.
